ToRoxy Music Club: The Hundreds and Thousands, “Rat Race”

By Music Muse | Published July 3rd, 2009

Where the Killers fell off, The Hundreds and Thousands definitely picked right back up.  This power pop Canadian band just recently released their single, “Rat Race“, evocative of the pressures of being on the grind in a big city, on their self-titled debut album.  There are soaring vocals, frantic tempos, and grungy guitar riffs that will charmingly surge its way into your heart.

It’s hard to stay mad when you listen to Miranda Lee Richard’s album, Light of X.  She was recently named the Voice of Vintage America for Nine West!  You’ll fload in the air with her unique blend of mellow pop mixed with folk rock.  Her pure and immaculate voice has a tendency to drown out any preexisting anxiety or worries in the song, “Early November“.  So sit back and let the warmth of her melodies take over you, the lyrical rays will envelope anyone in serenity.

SHARRRE*

*A collaborative show between the artists from the RRR project & Share With… Montauk. | 07.04.09 – 07.31.09 |

Montauk, NY — In an effort to initiate change and raise awareness East End artists have joined with creative’s from
all over the world to create an eco-friendly art show, which will be unveiled in Montauk next week.

The brainchild of designer Scott Massey (www.nohawk.com <http://www.nohawk.com> ), the show, which will premiere at Montauk’s Share With… on July 4th, showcases a collection of images and photographs all with one goal in mind: Waste less, act more.

These works are also assembled and being distributed in a book entitled “RRR,” to be released in mid to late August. Handmade artist’s proofs will be available for purchase at Share With… while the show is on display for the month of July.

In order to create the collection, artist were given a task: To look around their environment and see what they could save and reuse in a different way. The result is a stimulating and mind blowing assemblage of work that screams make change today, not tomorrow.

Massey, who has been surfing Montauk’s famous breaks his entire life, said he was prompted to launch the project after watching the ocean he so often spends time in being polluted and damaged.

A portion of the proceeds of the show and sale of “RRR” book will be donated to the East End chapter of The Surfrider Foundation. More information about the RRR Project can be found at www.rrrproject.com

Howdy from Galveston, TX - Dear and Yonder Premiere #2

By Mia | Published June 30th, 2009

Hi y’all!  We had a hot and sticky Dear and Yonder premier in Galveston, TX this weekend.

This area was greatly affected by the hurricanes and everyone there was so grateful that we came all the way there to show the movie.

Many people had driven all the way from Houston to join the crowd of over 200 people to watch the movie premiere.

Kassia Meador was on hand, signing tons of autographs at the premier, visiting local shops and even teaching at a surf camp with us the following day.  Here are a couple pictures of the event.

I hope y’all can join us for one of the upcoming Dear and Yonder premiers!

ToRoxy Music Club: The Black Lips, Satisfying Your Intrinsic Need For Garage Rock

By Music Muse | Published June 30th, 2009

There are times during the day when being raucous and needing to jump around and scream are completely necessary.  The Black Lips, and their garage rock punk appeal give anyone the opportunity to do just that.  Their fifth full length album, 200 Million Thousand features their newest single, I’ll Be With You, a sappy heartfelt song with its own sloppy feel and original twist.  They are currently on tour for the summer, be sure to check them out for a change of pace in your musical persona.

Song of the Week: I Will Come Back — Holy Ghost! — Green Label Sound

By daisyodell | Published June 30th, 2009

Holy Ghost released their ubiquitous song ‘Hold On’ on DFA in 2007 and it quickly became one of the biggest crossover tracks from the New Disco genre. The catchy dancefloor anthem works in the New York hipster underground, LA hip-hop ‘hot spots’, everywhere in between, and has been on heavy rotation in my sets since it’s release. Nick and Alex from Holy Ghost have been keeping busy producing dioscofied remixes for the likes of Phoenix, Cursive, Cut Copy, and MGMT, among others, but have been slow to share their original material with the world. The boys linked up with Green Label Sound and last week released a new single “I Will Come Back” (free download www.greenlabelsound.com/holyghost) to wet our appetites for their 2010 full-length album. Below is a video where Holy Ghost talks about how the song was produced.  Saturday night I had the pleasure of playing the dubplate (first pressing of vinyl/ only one in existence/ yes I am bragging :)) of ‘I Will Come Back’ at the DFA afterparty in downtown LA and watched as the disco glitter spread across the floor. This five and a half-minute dance floor epic, featuring the angelic voices of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus is dynamite and Holy Ghost have struck gold (again) with this layered and intelligent hit.
